Star Spangled Banner performed by Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock

Interesting. Do you rate this? I personally have always thought it one of his poorer live performances - incoherent. He was hampered admittedly by a band who were completely lost - hence the reason he was almost coaching them through the set. It also explains why he was increasingly drawn to jazz (and the rumoured Miles Davis jam comes to mind) because he couldn't get the quality he needed to accompany him in rock. Personally I think Tony Williams and Jaco Pastorius would have been the dream rhythm section for him.

I picked up the Woodstock DVD for a fiver recently. Santana and Sly are sensational. Una will know Henry McCullough from Portrush who played guitar in Cocker's Grease band at Woodstock. The best Beatles cover ever? Discuss.

Now I realise that you were referring to just the star spangled banner. One of the great musical/political statements. But comments on the set as a whole still apply.

We know Henry from Donegal - last spotted at a wedding we went to in Ramelton. He started out in a Dublin blues band called The People who made their London debut at Joe Boyd's UFO Club, home of early Pink Floyd and all manner of psychedelic happenings.

Agree absolutely on Santana, especially the fresh-faced Michael Shreeve. Joe Cocker's turn was also electric.

Jimi's overall set was weird - on the Monday morning with practically no audience and a wasteland before him. I think Gil Evans was very taken by Hendrix. I seem to remember Miles was also there at the Isle of Wight - shame they didn't hook up there. Jimi was on his way out at that point, a desperate performance.
